Medical Aspects of Disability of Aging, Presented by Dr. Diane Collins
This lecture will examine the characteristics of aging and medical conditions and diseases which result in the type of disabilities that can be ameliorated with appropriate technology. Incidence and prevalence of disabilities that result from the aging and medical diseases or conditions will be discussed to identify situations in which technology may be used to lessen a person's level of disability.
Week 4: June 18 - 22

Intro to AT and Good Design Practices, Presented by Dr. Koontz, Jeremy Puhlman and Mark McCartney
This lecture will cover the introduction to a wide range of assistive devices, as well as technical topics of design including CAD dimensioning details, part layout and assembly, tool and material specifications, manufacturing and rapid prototyping machinery and techniques

Quality of Life Technology Center Overview Presented by Dr. Takeo Kanade (QoLT Center Director)
The Quality of Life Technology (QoLT) center is a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center (ERC) whose mission is to transform lives of people with reduced functional capabilities due to aging and disability. QoLT ERC is a unique partnership between Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh that brings together a cross disciplinary team of technologists, clinicians, industry partners, end users, and other stakeholders to create revolutionary technologies that will improve and sustain the quality of life for all people.

The tour will cover the motion capture lab, educational robotic lab, humanoid robot lab, and assistive technology lab etc.
Week 6: July 2 - 6

Introduction to Research Methodology and Statistics Presented by: TBD
This lecture covers the research process from beginning to end, in both laboratory and field settings. Topics include institutional approval and ethical use of human subjects; formulation of research questions; different research designs; and survey techniques.
Week 7: July 9 - 13

Career workshop Facilitated by Dr. Ding and Dr. Koontz
The workshop is to inform the students of career opportunities related to quality of life technology, and to prepare them for graduate studies or professional careers. A panel of industry representatives and faculty/grad students will be invited to discuss their career path and strategy. They will also present their insights and answer questions on how to prepare for graduate schools or industry positions.
Blueroof Technologies use innovation, invention, and entrepreneurship to develop state-of-the-art living facilities that will keep senior citizens safer, healthier, and living independently at home as long as possible. As part of this mission, Blueroof Technologies is developing a comprehensive program for the McKeesport, Pennsylvania area to become a leader in Senior Smart Technology. Senior Smart Technology focuses on Information Technology, sensors, and computer hardware and software to monitor and optimize the lives of senior citizens, thereby avoiding or postponing institutional care by providing a safe home environment.

Technical Writing and Oral Presentations Presented by Dr. Diane Collins
This lecture presents basic technical writing principles of research papers and oral presentation techniques. Students will perform various exercises to enhance their writing and oral presentation skills.
Week 9: July 23 - 27

REU Research Symposium (QoLT and HERL) Facilitated by Dr. Ding and Dr. Koontz
The REU Research Symposium will give the students an opportunity to showcase their research findings to their peers, faculty, graduate students, and industry representatives. A total of 15 minutes will be allocated per student including 3-5 minutes for questions.
Week 10: July 30 - August 3
Exit interview and post survey

Extracurricular activities throughout the summer
REU interns will be supported to participate in the Pittsburgh Interns 2007 program hosted by Regional Internship Center of Southwestern PA[http://www.ric-swpa.org]. Activities will include kayaking on the Monongahela River, happy hours, interviews with local leaders, a Pirates game at PNC Park, and a day at Kennywood Amusement Park etc.
